Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: March 16th, 2018
We've found some truly special mid-century modern homes for you this week. Some are by renowned architects, others are in historically designated neighborhoods and there's even one by a famous prefab company.
All of the homes have many original features which we love. Sadly, many sellers often 'update' their homes before bringing them to market . In many cases (including us!) buyers much prefer to buy with original features intact and then make their own updates as they live in it. Let's hope more sellers will restrain themselves! Check out this week's houses below.
Ralph Twitchell Gem in Sarasota, FL - 2,312 sqft. ($724,000)
Built in 1961, this very original home (only 2 owners so far) was designed by the father of the Sarasota School of Architecture, Ralph Twitchell. Twitchell mentored the Sarasota School's most famous alumnus, Paul Rudolph. In fact, many of this home's features scream Rudolph - perhaps he was involved. Look for many great architectural moments including walls of glass, beautiful wood paneling, light filled rooms and an idyllic canal location. Bidding war? We think so.

Brutalist Masterpiece in Old Lyme, CT - 4,462 sqft. ($1,100,000)
This concrete compound is a real find. Designed by architect Olav Pedersen, it looks like a fortress from the outside with a balcony dramatically cantilevered over the front wall. Inside, walls of floor to ceiling windows, floating staircase and warm cypress ceilings provide sanctuary for the very lucky inhabitants. You NEED to see this house!

Looking for a neighborhood full of architectural magic? This 1955 Edward Hawkins design is for you. The Lusky house, as it is known, is located in Arapahoe Acres, a historically designated 50 acre post-war neighborhood featuring 124 modern homes in a range of styles from Usonian to International Style. This home is in excellent condition with great beams, floor to ceiling windows, a super cool fireplace and an open floor plan.

Floating Deck House in Carlisle, MA - 1,935 sqft. ($589,000)
There is so much to like about this Deck House prefab and its 2 acre lot. We love the carport / porte cochere formed by the continued roofline and the way the house floats on the sloping site. The post and beam structure allows a very open floor plan and a light-filled interior. Plenty of original features such as the bathroom tile and classic Deck House stairs.

Southwest Modern in Albuquerque, NM - 2396 sqft. ($300,000)
This is another compound home, this time with local character and features. A nice range of rooflines provide courtyards and vaulted ceilings. The original louvered doors allow versatile light control and airflow. This 1970 modern home also has beautiful beams and tongue and groove ceilings. Plenty of character!
