Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: September 14th, 2018

What is mid-century modern architecture, exactly? Often, the date range for all things mid-century modern is cited as 1949-1970. When we look for awesome houses, we often use that date range in order to find the coolest homes from the 1950s and 1960s. However, there are also plenty of spectacular MCM properties that are from the 1970s. This week, four of these featured properties were built in the 70s. Plus, there's a striking Norman Carver home that was built in 1992, but is clearly inspired by the designs of the mid-century.

Amazing Views in Sky Valley, GA - 2,724 sqft. ($295,000)

While the views are the main event in this property, the house does a pretty good job of creating just as much interest. With its walls of glass, vaulted ceilings and a very eye-catching fireplace, this home had loads to offer. Sited on an acre lot with 3 beds and baths, this 1974 property is a real star.

Original Minoru Yamasaki home in Bingham Farms, MI - 1,655 sqft. ($459,900)

A rare find here, this 1953 Yamasaki designed home appears to be all original and has not (yet) suffered at the hands of flippers or insensitive 'updaters'. We love the entry trellis, the see-through double sided fireplace and the colorful rear facade. There are plenty of other subtle and thoughtful design touches which only a high caliber architect can deliver.

Unique Foreclosure Project in Millville, NJ - 3,244 sqft. ($100,000 Foreclosure)

Definitely the most unusual home we're featuring this week is this 1977 home that could be mistaken for a factory at first glance. Despite its austere shell, the interior appears to be light filled, open and airy with its vaulted ceilings, banks of windows and subtle level changes. Foreclosed and with a starting price of 100k, this 3,244 square foot home should appeal to the project minded and could be something really special. Although the architect isn't named, the built ins and distinctive character of the home show a thoughtful approach to design.

Glass fronted Home in Clemson, SC - 3,541 sqft. ($299,990)

This home has an impressive glass ended main volume flanked by a garage one one side and bedroom block on the other. The massive brick fireplace provides privacy from the street and creates a strong grounding to the family rom behind it. The deck off the bedroom wing is a great place to take in the excellent landscaping. Plenty of space and a nice kitchen make this 1971 home one to strongly consider.

Imposing Prairie Home in Westminster, MD - 3,893 sqft. ($699,944)

Set on 25 acres, this imposing piece of architecture from 1974 makes you say 'wow'! Entering via a bridge, this is exciting design with perimeter decks and a catwalk to take in the views from the sloping site. We would have preferred to see more depth in the stonewashed interior as it pales in comparison to the exterior, but this is something that could be remedied by the buyer. Price recently reduced by 100k.

We shared this Norm Carver home earlier in the week but we're listing it a bonus property just in case you missed it:

Norman Carver Home in Kalamazoo, MI - 3,192 sqft. ($425,000)

Stunning Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home by our home's architect, Norman Carver. Built in 1994, this home is pure architectural joy. Making the most of the beautiful wooded site this south facing home has decks on the East, West and South side to make those winters more than bearable. An impressive fireplace is the centerpiece of the double height living room and the 5 bed, 4 bath home has plenty of space to offer.
