Mid Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: July 20th, 2018
This week in our real estate roundup, we're featuring a number of spectacular mid-century modern home for sale. There are some bargain homes in need of work, an enormous MCM mansion in New Orleans and a light, spacious modern home in Washington. Of special note is the small but fascinating home for sale in Illinois, which is being sold without interior photos and is at risk of becoming a tear-down for developers.
Bargain Post and Beam in El Campo, TX- 1,679 sqft. ($147,500)
Long and low post and beam design with carport, breeze block walled courtyard and loads of original features. Clerestory windows on the street side balance floor to ceiling glass on the rear. Kitchen and bathrooms appear original - just check out that tile! Nice brick fireplace and open living/dining/kitchen area.

Unique MCM Home at Risk in Saint Charles, IL - 1,034 sqft. ($199,900)
Very interesting 1952 home designed specifically for piano teacher Ebba Pike and her two grand pianos. While this listing only has one photo of the house it is my favorite kind of listing as the unknown screams potential for some great untouched mid century architecture. The listing states it could have been designed by the firm of Frazier Rafterty. This 1952 home has a large great room with vaulted ceiling and clerestory windows (visible only on street view). I love the narrow vertical cedar siding treatment and sparseness of the carport. As the lot is unusually narrow (50) and long (283) there is space to build another structure further down. This attractive parcel of land also makes it a target for developers who will demolish the home. Please share this with anyone who may be able to save and restore it.

MCM Mansion in New Orleans, LA - 5,537 sqft. ($1,000,000)
Huge steel frame modern home in need of restoration. Serious potential here with many great modern features such as the skylight lit staircase, classic entry, lovely wood paneling and walls of windows. Double Carport, courtyard, large covered patio and plenty of room for a pool. I like that this one is described as not a teardown, for once! The house immediately to the East has an almost identical entry design (with the most amazing breezeblock sceens) so I'd wager they were designed by the same architectural firm.

Concrete Architect-Designed Home in Lake Wales, FL - 2,647 sqft. ($375,000)
Unique custom concrete roof design complete with built in drains makes this truly a one of a kind home. Right on Lake Wales, this 1966 Florida house was built for the owner of a local concrete company. I stopped to meet the owner of this house as I drove by recently as I was struck by its unique design. Concrete columns are infilled with brick walls leaving space for clerestory windows above. The house is open and light and probably (hopefully!) has terrazzo under the carpets.

Bright and Open Modern Home in Tacoma, WA - 2,697 sqft. ($575,000)
This post and beam home in the woods is really nicely sited, making use of the terrain to provide a range of spaces, including a walkout basement and side carport. The main living area is wonderfully light thanks to floor to ceiling glass and an open plan. While the interiors lack cohesion, a bit of unifying work could easily tie things together, along with some tasteful mid century modern furniture.
